Intro
This table summarizes Registered Nurse (RN) staffing intensity over time using Payroll-Based Journal (PBJ) staffing data. I report RN hours per resident day (HPRD) and decompose it into Employee RN and Contract RN components.
Definition
RN HPRD is calculated as:
RN hours ÷ resident days.

Total RN HPRD: Total RN hours per resident day

Employee RN HPRD: RN hours worked by facility employees per resident day

Contract RN HPRD: RN hours worked by contract staff per resident day

How to interpret
Values reflect reported staffing in PBJ and are intended for descriptive comparisons over time.
Changes can reflect shifts in staffing models, labor market conditions, reporting patterns, and facility mix.
